Discerning God’s Voice

Thinking about how to know God's voice; discerning His blueprint.

How to Know When He Is Speaking

God Is Speaking… Are We Listening?

How do you actually know when God is speaking?
This is not just a question I hear from others—it is one I have walked through myself over many years.

Through seasons of family dysfunction, deep loss, healing, and restoration, I have come to understand something that has shifted everything for me:

  • God is always speaking.
  • The real question becomes… am I listening?
  • There was a time in my life when I wished there was a manual—something that would tell me exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. What I have come to realize is that we do have access to that kind of guidance… but it is not a checklist.
  • It is a relationship.
  • We have Someone who wants to guide us in each moment, each decision, each day.

The Challenge of Discerning God’s Voice

If God is speaking, why does it sometimes feel so difficult to hear Him clearly?
Because there are many voices.
We can listen to:
  • Our own thoughts and emotions
  • The opinions of others
  • The noise of the world
  • Or even the accusations of the enemy
Scripture asks a powerful question: “Who are you listening to?”
This question has become a filter for me.
Not every thought that enters your mind is truth.
Not every voice deserves your agreement.
Learning to discern God’s voice requires us to slow down, become aware, and begin to test what we are hearing.

The Four Levels of Listening

One of the ways the Lord has helped me grow in this area is through understanding the different levels of listening.

1. Listening to

This is the most basic level.
We are hearing information—words, instructions, sounds.

2. Listening for

Now we are listening for meaning.
What is being communicated beneath the words?

3. Listening with

This is a deeper awareness.
We begin to notice tone, emotion, body language, and what is not being said.

4. Listening in

This is where everything shifts.
This is where we partner with the Holy Spirit.
We begin to listen inwardly—to that still, small voice that aligns with God’s character, His Word, and His peace.
This is where discernment grows.

How to Recognize God’s Voice

Over time, I have learned that God’s voice carries certain qualities.
His voice will:
  • Align with Scripture
  • Bring peace, even in challenge
  • Lead, not accuse
  • Invite, not condemn
  • Produce clarity, not confusion
When I am unsure, I ask myself a simple question:
“Would the Lord say that to me?”
That question alone has helped me filter out so many thoughts that were never from Him.

Why Slowing Down Matters

We live in a world that rewards quick responses.
But spiritually, reacting quickly often leads to confusion.
Listening requires us to slow down.
To pause.
To become aware.
To receive.
Listening is not passive—it is an intentional, active posture of the heart.
In fact, listening is deeply connected to obedience. When we truly listen, we respond.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

One of the most freeing truths I have learned is this:
You were never meant to figure life out on your own.
There is a blueprint for your life.
And there is a Guide who knows it fully.
As we grow in listening, we begin to walk in greater peace, clarity, and confidence—not because we have all the answers, but because we know the One who does.

A Simple Practice to Begin

If you are wanting to grow in hearing God’s voice, start here:
  1. Take a few minutes today.
  2. Sit quietly.
  3. Ask the Lord a simple question.
  4. Then listen.
  5. Not with pressure.
  6. Not striving to “get it right.”
  7. Just listen.
  8. You may be surprised at what begins to unfold.
Let me leave you with this:
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
You are already someone who can hear His voice.
The invitation is simply to listen.
